Kirby 3D is a 3D platformer featuring Kirby's second descent into the 3D stage, produced by HAL Laboratory and released on 2014 for the Wii U. According to Satoru Iwata, this game is like an incorporation of almost all of the Kirby main series games as it includes numerous things from past Kirby games.

The story of the game starts with Kirby and a small dragon named Drafero running after a small apple rolling away. They stop once they reach a part of the forest where a small nymph is seen hurt. Kirby and Drafero go to help her up and decide to give her the apple. The fairy revives and thanks both heroes for saving her but before she can go to her planet, she remembers having her Spirit Wand which is the source of her power and without it, her kingdom will be in peril. Kirby and Drafero, both being the heroic kind, set out to recover the pieces of the fairy's wand.

Passing through the 5 levels, Kirby and his friend managed to restore the complete Spirit Wand and give it to the fairy in need. The fairy thanked them for their heroic act and invited them to her world, the Sparkle Star where lots of her kind live. She is apparently the queen of the star but when Kirby, Drafero and the fairy reach Sparkle Star, they see it being terrorized by evil monsters. Kirby and Drafero were up to the task to try and save the fairy's kingdom. The heroes reach Sparkle Star's castle and the fairy quickly regains her throne. She once again thanked the heroes but before she could give some of her powers to Kirby, Drafero quickly bashes both Kirby and the fairy, making the fairy's crown and wand fall to Drafero's feet. Drafero puts on the crown and the wand and assumes total control of Sparkle Star. At this point, Drafero is protected by a powerful barrier. The evil dragon explains his plan from the beginning. Apparently, the dragon was flying around until he saw Kirby walking around. The dragon, thinking he could use the puffball to his advantage, got on Kirby's good side and quickly became friends. All the time, Drafero has been using Kirby to get to the Sparkle Star and assume control of it as well as gaining magical powers.

The dragon creates a blast of sparkles which sends Kirby and the fairy queen to a far island on Sparkle Star. Drafero made his army search for Kirby and execute him whenever they could. Kirby and the fairy managed to get back to the castle and see a portal that leads to another dimension. Kirby is dragged to it by a large black claw and ends up in a black hole. Drafero, in a more dragon appearance, enters the area and battles the puffball. Despite the dragon's power, he was beaten and his scepter fell off. Kirby grabs the scepter and apparently "wins" the battle. Drafero was being sneaky and had his own black scepter which made him much more powerful, turning him into Draconic Lord. Kirby managed to finally defeat the dragon, who met his fate by falling into the black hole in the background. The crown fell off and the scepter was rid of the dark magic it had. Kirby returned to Sparkle Star and gave the fairy queen her belongings. The fairy queen congratulates Kirby and gives him one inch of her scepter's power to him. Kirby is then brought outside and is celebrated by millions of Sparkle Star residents. Kirby winks at the player but then notices a white flash in the background, he grins and the main story ends.

The normally gameplay consists of a platformer similar to Kirby 64 mixed with Kirby's Return to Dreamland. The game is almost completely in 3D. Some of the levels are in 2D while some are in 3D. A new ability is introduced in the form of "Earth". This ability can use the powers of the earth to make fissures, lava spouts, shoot rocks or make tremors. Abilities from past games such as Animal and Bubble return with the only abilities not shown are Broom and Catapum (instead, it's replaced by Crash).

  • Like in Kirby's Return to Dreamland, the levels have a hidden message in the names.

Which means D-R-A-F-E-R-O, foreshadowing his role as the main villain.
